Vault and Modern Architecture

The vault is frequently used as an overlay element in architecture is an ceiling cover which formed by the combination of arches. Mostly it has a semi-cylindrical form, concave from the bottom. Also it is mostly knitted with bricks and stones.

The vault was an important building element for Romans. During their era, Barrel vaults were a crucial part of the construction of churches and cathedrals. Barrel vaults were generally used for roofing aim as they allowed large interior spaces. But, they also helped in forming long hallways, sewers, halls, and cellars.

They have great aesthetic appeal so they are still using in buildings around the world. This era mostly barrel vaults are made from concrete and have metal framing.

I found that TWA Flight Center in Newyork has that condition too. It is built by Eero Saarinen. It is vaulted through the whole main terminal space. It has a roof which is acting like a shell. This shell allows interior spaces also as the Roman’s vault. Except that he designed a beautiful exterior shape, but also he create a huge open space in the interior of the building.

Also interior is continuous because there are no columns or divisions that block the inner paths. It is a good example of a modern building utilizing vaulted forms.
